Lake Clark National Park is one of the least visited parks in the country, so it’s pretty untouched and the beauty is heavenly! It was pouring and very cloudy when we flew in (in a 5-seater single engine plane!), and we didn’t see any of the promised views :(. We had booked a 1.5 day package and stayed at the Farm Lodge, owned by Glen Jr. That afternoon we hiked the Tanalian Trail and Kontrashibuna Lake. Farm Lodge is a family run resort and offers the Best. Food. Ever! They were kind enough to accommodate our dietary restrictions.
On day 2, we explored Lake Clark in a canoe. Post canoe-ing we were invited to join the group of locals in their party. It was a beautiful clear summer day and everyone was out running, cheering, and having fun! Seaplanes of all colors flew in and out the lake. I think some of them were flying lessons, since we saw them multiple times. That moment when the plane touches the surface of the water – it seems like a bird’s landing.
We flew out in the afternoon, but this time the scenery was different. It was breathtaking – probably the highlight of our Alaska trip! We flew through the famous Lake Clark Pass and saw glaciers up close. Our mini plane glided barely a few hundred feet above the pass! It was like leaving a fairyland 😀
Here’s one of our email exchanges a few months after our Alaska trip: “Let’s live in Alaska, on Lake Clark. Work in a small farm, grow our own vegetables, row our boats far away, climb new mountains ever so often!”.
Amen!
